    Description

American literature and American politics have been closely connected since the nation's beginning: the authors of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers and other key documents were accomplished rhetoricians and writers. Presidential speeches and other special-occasion utterances—such as by pioneering feminists or Civil Rights leaders—have tended to combine sophisticated argument and linguistic elegance. The Trump administration caused many observers to question whether political discourse in the US had been altered permanently. In this class, we will look at classic statements on the topic of Democracy in America and will consider both their political and literary relevance. We will also consider the question of how the Trump years changed the public discourse.
