Equivalence Licentiate / Master

The equivalence of level between Licentiates and University diplomas awarded under the "old" system of study and the Master diploma is officially recognised.

Holders of a Licentiate or a University diploma thus automatically bear the title of Master instead of the former title.

However, the title covered by the old law and the degree of Master of Arts, Master of Law, Master of Science or Master of Theology may only be used alternately; the two titles may not be used simultaneously on the same document.

In any case, the detailed designation of the branch of studies in the title of Master is not permitted, since the contents of the old course of study often do not correspond to the contents of the new Master's programmes.

The attestation of equivalence issued by the University of Fribourg therefore does not constitute a Master diploma, but merely confirms the equivalence of the titles obtained.

Procedure for issuing an attestation of equivalence Licentiate / Master

The application must be submitted electronically to the Academic Directorate of the University of Freiburg using the form provided. A copy confirming payment of the fee required for this service must be attached to the application.

After verifying the obtainment of the old degree, the Academic Directorate will prepare the requested document which will be sent to the applicant by postal mail.
