Teachers Description In this course, we look at democracies and the role of media and communication. In the first part, we establish basic knowledge and look at Greek origin of democracy, at characteristics of Western democracy, at democratic theory, measures for democracy, at democratic innovations, and ask whether established democracies have come under pressure. In the second part, we focus on the role of media to democracy and society, and discuss whether internet platforms and information provider can be conceived as media and can fullfill these functions. In this context, we also discuss the design of technology, algorithms, AI, trust(worthiness), nudging, propaganda, mis-and disinformation, and media literacy.
Training objectives - You know key concepts of democratic theory in general, and can apply them to the real world.
- You can identify key challenge(s) of todays’ Western democracies.
- You can describe and evaluate role of the media and internet platforms in a society and its key functions and contribution to democracy.
- You become able to understand, analyze, and argue about crucial factors in the opinion formation process, and in the creation of social cohesion (e.g. algorithms).
- You are familiar with nudging, mis/disinformation, (trust)worthinessand can critically discuss them.
- You can define media literacy and can conceptualize measures to train it.
