Véronique Marmy Cusin

Doctor of Education (French teaching)

Biography

I am a full professor at the University of Fribourg in the teacher training department of the new EDUFORM faculty, and I am also responsible for the primary school teacher training programme. Previously, I was a professor at the Fribourg University of Teacher Education from its inception.
My main interest as a trainer and researcher is the development of a metalinguistic approach in all learners, whether they are beginning to learn to read and write, developing skills and resources to make the best use of French as the language of schooling, or young adults training to become teachers.
I was co-leader of a major research project on grammar teaching entitled "Principles of a fundamental grammar teaching methodology. Analysis of the situation in French-speaking Switzerland, experimentation with innovative approaches and re-examination of the status of the transposition of grammatical objects" from 2018 to 2023 (FNS n° 100019_179226).
I currently head a research unit entitled ‘Metalinguistic postures and language interactions in teaching and learning (META S&L)’ at the Centre for Primary School Teacher Training (CEDP).

On a more associative level, I have been a member of the Board of Directors (CA) of the International Association for Research in French Language Teaching (AIRDF) since 2016 and was Vice-President of this association from 2019 to 2025. I organised the association's latest conference in July 2025, entitled "Teaching practices and learner activity in French language teaching: where are we in 2025? "
On the teaching side, I have been involved for many years in developing tools for students and teachers, and I was co-editor of the new Mémento for Cycle 3. Here are the two most recent projects already available to teachers:
2018-2022: Creation of grammar teaching sequences, teaching sequences developed by the GRAFE'Maire group as part of the FNS project, Outputs oriented towards application.
2016-2021: Updating, harmonising and publishing online teaching sequences for French cycles 1, 2 and 3 — Understanding and expressing oneself in French. Member of the monitoring and expertise group. These sequences are available in the French-speaking teaching resources (CIIP).
