Biography
Dr. des. Malaika Sutter is teaching the proseminar “Troubled Returns: Practices of Remembrance in American Literature and Culture” at the Department of English in Fribourg this fall term. She studied Languages and Literatures in English and History at the University of Bern and the University of Rochester, NY. She completed her interdisciplinary doctoral thesis, “Crafting Communities and Stitching Stories: Text(ile)-Image in Contemporary North American Fiction and Art” (sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation) in 2025 and is currently starting her new research project, “The Aesthetics and Politics of Nostalgia and Solastalgia in North American Literature and Culture.” Her main research interests include North American literature and cultural history (19th to 21st centuries), feminist and queer literary theories, intermediality, ekphrasis, intersectionality, memory studies, nostalgia, historiography, citizenship, and the history and representation of incarceration in North America.
