Biography
Shirin Naef is currently working on her habilitation project on Rules of Property and Contract: Law, Freedom and the State in Iran. She completed her Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at the University of Zurich while she was a doctoral fellow in Bioethics at the International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen. She studied Social Anthropology, Islamic Studies, and General Linguistics at the University of Bern. Naef was a fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study “Law as Culture” at the University of Bonn, and at the 2024-25 Mellon/SAR Academic Freedom Workshop & Fellowships. Her research and teaching interests focus on Sociology and Anthropology of Law, Legal History, Constitutionalism, Law and Society, Law and Arts, and History of Liberalism.
