    Mrs Osksana Ruchynska is associate professor at the Karazin Kharkiv National University in Ukraine at the Ancient and Medieval History Department. Her research focuses on the socio-cultural history and archeology of the ancient Northern and Western Black Sea regions. Her work on Greek and Roman festivals is now expanding on play and leisure (games and toys). Due to the war she left Ukraine with her daughter (teenager) leaving behind her husband and son. Right now she is in Austria. She has been working with Prof. Véronique Dasen since 2019 on joint research projects on ancient play, games, and leisure. Prof. Dasen wants to integrate her in her department and ERC research group.

    Bones of contention: rethinking astragaloi in ancient Greece

    The research on the function of Greek knucklebones in ancient Greece will be composed of three parts. Based on a review of documentary sources, Barbara Carè will first examine the value of astragali as playthings and game tools and assess what we actually know about games with astragali from ancient documents, as well as explore forms of continuity between past and present games collected in modern South Italy and Sicily. She will address how far such dynamic and polyvocal kind of evidence can be methodologically reconstructed from the past. Second, selected examples from different chronological and geographical contexts in Greece and South Italy, especially funerary (tombs of individuals of different sex and ages) and votive (sacred caves and sanctuaries) will be critically analysed. The comparison between evidence from funerary and religious contexts will shed light on the polysemic value of these objects in Greek society (alluding metaphorically to the prosperity of a farming family, to milk feeding animals, to successful games, to sociability, to securing luck, to divinatory activities...) and demonstrate methodologically the wealth of knowledge that can be deduced from a context-based analysis. The third part of the stay will be dedicated to studying manufacturing processes in order to reassess the interpretation of worked bones. A typochronology will be presented and discussed. Beside unaltered specimens, worked astragali – painted, polished, trimmed, holed, cut, marked or inscribed - are known from all over the ancient Mediterranean. A careful study of the different types of modifications and of their distribution and find-contexts in the Greek world allows reflecting on their votive, funerary, or gaming functions with different purposes (counters, markers, tokens, aso).

    “Fashion in the West”: Bodies, Dress and Identities in Apulian Iconography (5th-3rd cent.BC.)

    Textile craftsmanship and dress provide a privileged access to the social, cultural and economic fabric of past societies. Over the last two decades, the interest in the study of clothing in Antiquity has increased significantly. As Roland Barthes (1957) and several scholars after him demonstrated, dress plays a key role not only in the construction of social, gendered, ethnic, individual, and collective identities, it is also part of non-verbal communication in a shared normative system. Both the materiality (shape, texture, color) and the context in which it is worn (domestic, ritual, civic) are intertwined with various symbolic, social and religious values. This project is part of the innovative researches developed by the working groups (WG) of the COST Action « Euroweb. Europe through textiles » (CA #19131). It considers clothing as an identity marker and investigates this cultural dimension in iconographic representations produced in Apulia between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, a region characterized by the coexistence of the Greek people established in Taranto with different indigenous populations (Messapians, Peucetians and Daunians).The study will be based on a multidisciplinary approach, gathering archaeological, iconographic and written data in order to analyze the self- and collective representations of gender, age, status and ethnic identities, as well as the social interactions between these populations through the lenses of clothes and body ornaments. The research focuses more specifically on Apulian vase painting produced in Taranto and distributed in South Italy both in Greek and indigenous settlements (ca 430-300 BC). The material is extensive (ca 10,000) and well published. A large number of vases, still under-exploited, are decorated with representations of women and men’s attire displaying interactions between the Greek inhabitants (apoikioi) and indigenous people which are not reduced to violent confrontations as mentioned in Greek literary sources. The visual language of vase painters reveals the peaceful weaving of Greek and Italic identities with varying accents over one hundred years. We will question how far visual conventions reflect socio-cultural changes, such as mixed marriages or trade relationships with neighbouring communities. This investigation of the fabric of gendered and multicultural identities will be divided into three parts. The first one will create a typology of the different visual clothing elements characterising Greek or local identities. These items will be classified according to their type (WG2) (dress, hairdress, hairstyle, shoes, body ornaments), their wearers (women or men, children or adults), as well as compared with depictions on other media (wall paintings, terracotta, reliefs) and with ancient written sources to establish a reference terminology (WG3). The second part will analyse the different types of dress according to social interactions in iconographical contexts where local and Greek people could interact (e.g. daily life, religious scenes, such as libation, marriage, funerals). The methodological limits of such investigations will be addressed, namely how to identify a local person in Greek attire, partners of mixed marriages and so on. We will finally compare the dress depicted in iconography with extant archaeological textile evidence of Apulia (WG4) and experimental archaeology. The third part will revisit the long-lasting devaluation of Italic people in ancient Apulia, often examined solely in relation to Greek culture. Their classification as “non-Greeks” as well as the use of the expression “Magna Grecia” (Strabo 6.1.2) have imposed a misleading appreciation of a culturally complex and evolving area. The study of dress will contribute to developing another view as mixed indigenous and Greek clothing could reflect the appropriation of Greek customs and culture among Italics users as well as the reverse, the influence of Italic people on Greek habits. The research thus aims to be a benchmark re evaluating the extent of cross-cultural exchanges in Apulia (coastal and hinterland) based on most recent post-colonial studies.

    Children's self-made toys and spontaneous play in Classical Antiquity

    This three-months scientific exchange will be devoted to researching the archaeological traces of children' spontaneous play and self-made artefacts in Classical antiquity, as long as it is possible to recognize toys self-made by infants. Beside toys manufactured by adults to convey a message about the roles children would be called to play within the society (good bride and mother for girls, brave warrior and active citizen for boys), any object may have become a toy in the hands of a child. Our common aim will be to identify this toy-stage in the biography of ancient artefacts and to try to understand what children might have experienced by playing spontaneously It will foster an intense collaboration between the PI, her team, and the invited professor on this neglected topic. This partnership between two scholars specialised in the history of childhood will contribute new insights to the ERC advanced project Locus Ludi. The Cultural Fabric of Play and Games in Classical Antiquity. Claudia Lambrugo will base her study on various archaeological sources that will be collected and analysed during the stay, in regular exchanges with the ERC team. This collective work will be associated with three presentations of results at workshops and conferences organised at Fribourg University in December 2020, January and February 2021. This stay will produce several outcomes, chapters for the forthcoming Handbook on Play and Games, for two collective books and a joint peer-reviewed paper.

    Poupées articulées grecques et romaines (Xe s. av. J.-C./ VIIe s. apr. J.-C.): Approches archéologiques et anthropologiques

    Ce projet pluridisciplinaire est consacré à une catégorie d’objets d’ordinaire classés dans la catégorie moderne des jouets: les figurines anthropomorphes qui représentent le plus souvent une femme adulte au corps sexué, communément appelées « poupées » à cause de leur taille réduite et de leurs membres articulés. Dans le monde grec, aux « idoles cloches » (Xe-VIIe s. av. J.-C.) succède la production de figurines principalement en terre cuite, mais aussi en os, de la fin de l’époque archaïque à l’époque hellénistique (VIe-IIe s. av. J.-C.). Dans le monde romain, en Italie et dans les provinces, les figurines sont en os, ivoire, bois, ambre, de l’époque romaine impériale à l’Antiquité tardive (fin Ier-VIIe s. apr. J.-C.). Plus rares, des « poupées » articulées masculines sont aussi produites dès la fin du Ve s. av. J.-C. Aucune étude scientifique d’ensemble n’a encore traité ce phénomène culturel de manière approfondie en dépit de l’abondance et de l’importance sociale, religieuse et symbolique de ces objets associés à la classe d’âge de l’enfance et de la jeunesse. Dans le monde grec, les poupées articulées proviennent par centaines de sanctuaires de divinités protégeant la croissance et le mariage ainsi que de tombes de jeunes individus. En Italie et dans les provinces, la majorité provient de sépultures d’enfants et de femmes en âge de se marier et de procréer. Ces objets se situent dans un entre-deux dont ce projet entend explorer les limites (jouet profane ou objet sacré ? mortelle ou divinité ? poupée ou marionnette de spectacle ?), les spécificités et les transformations dans l’espace et le temps en croisant différents points de vue afin d’élucider les raisons de leur ambiguïté. Le point de vue typo-chronologique : quels matériaux pour quelle ergonomie ? quelles modalités de production et quel réseau de diffusion ? Le point de vue socio-religieux : où et comment sont-elles manipulées (contexte profane, religieux ou les deux ?), par quelle classe d’âge (que pré-adulte ?), quel sexe (que les filles ?), et quelles transformations de leurs usages dans l’espace et le temps ? L’étude s’intéressera aussi aux valeurs symboliques et d’apprentissage que transmet cette représentation spécifique du corps féminin (et masculin) et la mobilité des membres. La recherche se compose de deux volets distinguant production grecque et romaine. Pour le monde grec, de nouvelles connaissances seront livrées par l’étude d’objets inédits ou méconnus : les poupées articulées d’ateliers à Athènes (IVe – IIe s. av. J.-C.), ainsi que les figurines en terre cuite et en os de Grèce centrale (Xe- IVe s. av. J.-C.). Les résultats mettront en perspective ces nouveautés avec les corpus déjà publiés en réévaluant la chronologie, la diffusion et les contextes des différents types. Pour l’époque romaine, le nombre réduit d’objets permet d’établir un corpus exhaustif en reprenant l’identification des matériaux, les contextes, la distribution spatiale et l’évolution chronologique. Pour les deux corpus, grec et romain, l’archéologie expérimentale et des analyses tracéologiques permettront de proposer de nouvelles hypothèses sur les techniques de fabrication et les usages. La recherche comprend aussi l’étude approfondie des sources écrites et iconographiques pour comprendre les différents statuts de ces objets, leurs rapports avec la notion de jouet et d’autres formes de figurines articulées, comme les marionnettes et les figures divines animées, ainsi que d’autres sortes de poupées (de chiffon, en cire, « magiques »). Des comparaisons diachroniques se feront avec les productions de poupées non articulées du monde oriental, copte et byzantin, ainsi que d’autres périodes historiques. L’objectif est d’apporter une contribution de référence novatrice, à la fois empirique et théorique, sur l’histoire des « poupées » articulées antiques dans toutes leurs dimensions, technique, ludique, sociale, religieuse, symbolique et genrée.

    This six-months scientific exchange will be devoted to reconstructing the role of play in education and socialisation process in the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity. It will foster an intense collaboration between the PI, her team, and the invited professor on this neglected topic that requires an in-depth and thorough investigation. This partnership between two scholars specialised on the history of childhood will significantly contribute to launching the ERC advanced project obtained by the PI and due to start on september 15 (Locus Ludi. The Cultural Fabric of Play and Games in Classical Antiquity). In order to provide new insights, Christian Laes will base his study on a large variety of written sources (literary texts, inscriptions, papyri) that will be collected and analysed during his stay. The study will be based on a careful reading, discourse analysis, regularly shared with the ERC team, also providing new translations that will be included in the planned anthology. This collective work involves regular presentations of results at workshops and conferences organised at Fribourg University. This stay will produce several outcomes, the proceedings of the first ERC conference, peer-reviewed papers by the PI and her guest, chapters for the forthcoming Handbook on Play and Games and the preparation of the section on education for the Anthology of Play and Games in Classical Antiquity.

    This interdisciplinary project is based on the study of cemeteries from Roman Aventicum/ Avenches (1st-3rd c. AD). It will combine traditional documentary evidence (literary, epigraphic and iconographic sources), and archaeological evidence (burial context and associated material), with anthropological data (study of the skeletal remains, recording of pathological conditions on the bones), and stable isotope data for the reconstruction of breastfeeding and weaning patterns. The aim is to serve as an exemplary model for a specific geographic region of the Roman Empire by offering comparative data in order to understand the causes of infant health hazards and their possible relation to feeding practices. It will provide a holistic investigation of how socio-cultural beliefs influenced feeding practices, adding to the scientific debate on ancient childhood in a wide temporal and regional context.

    L’objectif de ce projet est de contribuer au renouveau de l’histoire de la médecine à l’époque romaine en intégrant la question des conditions de vie des Anciens, telles qu’une approche interdisciplinaire, croisant sources écrites et archéologiques, permet de les appréhender. Sans promouvoir une véritable politique sanitaire concertée, l’état romain a mis en place différentes mesures dans le but d’améliorer l’hygiène de la population: aménagement et contrôle de l’alimentation en eau (aqueducs, thermes), installations sanitaires (égouts, latrines). Conscients également de l’importance de l’environnement sur la santé, les auteurs anciens insistent sur la prise en compte de la nature des lieux et de la différence des climats pour choisir l’emplacement de l’habitat; ils se soucient de la qualité de l’air susceptible d’être pollué par les évaporations d’égouts, de marécages, de matières en putréfaction, ainsi que par toutes sortes de vapeurs, fumées et poussières émanant des villes. Mais de nombreuses lacunes au niveau de l’hygiène menacent la santé des habitants (mauvaise évacuation des déchets, manque d’aération et de lumière, conservation inadéquate des aliments, vermine et parasites, usage du plomb dans la vaisselle). Les recherches vont étendre à de nouvelles thématiques une approche basée sur la pluridisciplinarité, alliant les apports de différents domaines, historiques (épigraphie, numismatique, sources écrites) et archéologiques (sites et monuments, objets de la vie quotidienne, documents figurés, paléopathologie, paléobotanique) afin d’élargir les perspectives en intégrant les données issues des dernières avancées de la recherche. L’histoire de la médecine, et plus largement de la santé, se prête particulièrement bien à ce type de démarche. La problématique étant très large, l’impact des conditions de vie et de la politique sanitaire sur l’hygiène et la santé sera étudiée au travers de l’étude de cas. Deux dossiers constituent ce projet. Le premier, intitulé «Médecine et hygiène dans l’armée romaine», sera traité par M. Pascal Bader. Différents types de sources, littéraires, épigraphiques et archéologiques, témoignent de l’attention portée à l’hygiène, à la salubrité, ainsi qu’à la prise en charge des soldats blessés et malades. Cette thématique a été jusqu’ici abordée de manière incomplète par les historiens et les archéologues. Plusieurs spécialistes se sont intéressés à l’organisation du service médical dans l’armée romaine, ainsi qu’aux espaces de soins dans les camps, mais en se focalisant sur un seul type de sources, principalement épigraphiques, sans jamais prendre en compte l’ensemble des sources à disposition. Les travaux préparatoires de M. Bader, achevés sous la forme du mémoire de master «La médecine dans l’armée romaine, entre sources écrites et sources archéologiques», ont montré la richesse du sujet et l’apport de découvertes récentes, notamment dans le camp de Novae en Bulgarie. Le deuxième projet, intitulé «Médecine et soins des enfants dans le monde romain», sera traité par Mme Lucinne Rossier dont les travaux préparatoires ont pris la forme du mémoire de master «La ville, espace pathogène à Rome? Mythe et réalité». Son projet visera à rassembler les sources grecques et latines se rapportant à la pédiatrie antique, en les lisant à la lumière des autres disciplines historiques (épigraphie, archéologie, paléopathologie). Cette étude réunira d’une part le corpus commenté des textes médicaux grecs et latins relatifs à la pédiatrie, d’autre part des documents archéologiques associés à la culture matérielle des enfants replacés dans leur cadre de vie (épidémiologie, paléopathologie). Ces deux thématiques de recherche, qui touchent plus largement à l’histoire du corps et de la santé publique, seront intégrées par les deux doctorants à l’exposition sur «La médecine, l’hygiène et la santé à l’époque romaine» qui s’ouvrira au Musée romain de Nyon en mai 2010.

    Ce projet porte sur l’édition, la traduction et le commentaire de trois traités transmis sous le nom de Mélampous, l’hiérogrammate, consacrés à l’interprétation divinatoire des signes corporels Ces traités se composent du : 1) Peri palmon mantike, sur l’observation des tressaillements involontaires du corps, 2) PPeri elaion tou somatos, sur la lecture divinatoire des marques naturelles du corps, et du 3) Peri ton tes Selenes prognoseon, aussi connu sous le titre de Lunarium, un traité d’astrologie consacré à l’interprétation des phases de la lune lors de son passage dans les douze signes du zodiaque. Un passage d’Artémidore dans sa Clef des songes, « Mélampous … dans son livre Sur les prodiges et les signes », permet d’avancer que ces trois textes ont fait partie d’un seul livre. Ces traités constituent un ensemble unique, jusqu'ici négligé. Ils sont d’un accès difficile et leurs éditions datent d’au moins un siècle. Ce projet propose d'en réaliser une édition critique dotée d’une première traduction moderne en français, accompagnée d’un commentaire approfondi. Nous tenterons de résoudre la question problématique de l’attribution et de la datation des traités par l’étude approfondie de leur langue et de leur contenu. La croyance aux correspondances cachées entre les mouvements du corps, les marques naturelles et l'ordre cosmique a occupé une place importante dans la société antique. Le langage corporel appartient à ces savoirs partagés qui s’inscrivent dans la très longue durée. Son origine se perd en Grèce ancienne, qui l’a sans doute hérité du monde assyro-babylonien. Pour les Anciens, le corps peut produire des signes qui sontl’expression de la volonté divine et de l’ordre cosmique. Leur valeur est prémonitoire. Ils annoncent des événements, heureux ou malheureux, qui concernent le destin individuel. L’art de les interpréter suit le principe général que toute perte de maîtrise du corps est due à une intervention surnaturelle. L’étude de ce savoir, longtemps tenu pour une décadence de la "physiognomonie scientifique", nécessite une démarche pluridisciplinaire, au carrefour de l’histoire de la médecine, de l’art et des religions. Elle participe au développement du nouveau champ d’étude que représente l’histoire du corps.
