Introduction to academic writing in the Social Sciences and Humanities

Writing plays a major role in university education, from your first essay to your BA or MA thesis. But what exactly is “academic writing” and what makes texts written in a university context “academic”? In this six-part workshop, we focus on various aspects of academic writing and the challenges it presents: different types of texts and their specific qualities, engaging with other people’s ideas through reading and processing research literature, argumentative structure, language, and style.

The first part of the course (sessions 1-3) focuses on reading and writing German-language texts and will be taught in German. Participants take an active role in the course— analyzing and discussing other people's writing, producing their own texts, and reflecting on the writing process as a whole.

The second part (sessions 4-6) will introduce the specifics of international English-language standards for academic writing and will be taught in English. Participants will be introduced to the structure of academic writing in the social sciences and history, be exposed to the main strategies for developing literature reviews, learn how to ethically use AI in the writing process and draw from the course to prepare a final presentation stemming from their work and research interests. Every session will feature active participation and writing from the students.

    Learning objectives:

    Participants will:

    - become familiar with the various phases of the writing process and gain confidence in planning the timing of writing projects

    - gain an overview of various types of academic texts, their content and structural characteristics and special features

    - improve their ability to understand and reproduce complex text structures by developing appropriate strategies

    - be familiar with different approaches to text revision and supportive mutual feedback

    - reflect on their writing process and be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses in writing.

    Performance assessment requirements:

    - Regular active participation in meetings and working groups (including peer feedback)

    - Writing your own short texts between meetings

    - Submission of a personal learning reflection at the end of the course
