This bilingual competition (French and English) offers the opportunity to compete against student teams from different European and US universities. Its aim is to test the students’ knowledge of European Union law on the basis of a practical legal case.

The Moot Court consists of three phases: the composition of the written pleadings (until mid/end November), oral pleadings at the regional final (February) and at the final at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg (April).

Interested students must apply to the responsible person for participation in the ELMC. All students can apply for the competition, under the condition that they are not currently working as a lawyer and that they have never participated in an earlier oral round.

A pleading can be recognised as a (pro-)seminar paper or as special credits. German-speaking students of the bilingue programme can have a pleading written in French credited as a French (pro-)seminar paper.

Students ought to learn to draft a pleading to resolve a practical case in European Union law both from the point of view of the applicant and the defendant. In the oral pleadings, students train their presentation skills to represent clients before a court.

In principle, 6 ECTS are awarded for the written part and a total of 10 ECTS including the oral part. The recognition of the written part as a (pro-)seminar paper is possible.

Grading or passed/not passed, depending on the type of crediting.

After an introductory session, the students do research autonomously to draft their written pleadings while the coach is available as a contact person.
