    Part I: Laser Spectroscopy
    1. Introduction to Laser Spectroscopy
    2. Interaction of light with matter
    3. Classical Lorentz oscillator - atoms at rest
    4. Width and profiles of spectral lines
    5. Techniques of laser spectroscopy
    6. Nonlinear spectroscopy
    7. Advanced Laser Spectroscopy Methods

    Part II: X-ray spectroscopy
    1. Atomic inner-shell decay processes (radiative decay, Auger and Coster-Kronig decay, fluorescence yields)
    2. X-ray terminology
    3. X-ray energies (diagram and satellite transitions)
    4. Selection rules (matrix elements, E1, M1 and E2 selection rules for diagram and satellite transitions)
    5. Natural line width and shape of x-ray lines
    6. Energy dispersive detectors (Gas detectors, scintillation counters, semiconductor detectors)
    7. Wavelength dispersive detectors (Flat crystal spectrometers, Laue-type and Bragg-type bent crystal spectrometers)

    Training objectives On successful completion of the course, the student will
    • be familiar with the fundamental techniques of high-resolution laser spectroscopy (Doppler-free saturation and polarization spectroscopy, two-photon spectroscopy, double resonance spectroscopy).
    • be familiar with the fundamentals of x-ray transitions (energies, natural widths, selection rules, transition probabilities, satellite lines).
    • know the most important x-ray production processes and the instrumentation employed in x-ray spectroscopy (energy-dispersive and wavelength dispersive detectors).
    • have deepened his knowledge by solving simple exercises in connection with the experiments.
