Description The course focuses on processing, analyzing and applying of environmental data, with focus on mountain regions. Dedicated scientific tools and methods are introduced and hands-on exercises allow for in-depth training. The students will apply the learned skills by conducting an own small project. Along with the presentations of the own project, the results will be discussed and critically reflected. As most of the data are relevant with regard to climate change, special emphasis is given also on the possibilities and limitations of the used data and methods in view of societal relevant aspects like climate change adaptation and risks.
The students work with different types of climate data and get to know respective data formats (ascii, netcdf, etc.) and analysis tools. They extract cryospheric information from remote sensing data and use them for further calculations (e.g. glacier volume) in a GIS. The combination of climate and cryospheric data allows for transient analyses and integrated climate change impacts assessment.Training objectives The objective of the course is to train students in the use of various environmental data and methods and to learn the critical reflection of results from applying these data and methods, regarding accuracy, uncertainties and reliability.
