    Description

Drama is probably the most direct literary instrument for effective social critique.  It tends to be up-to-the-minute contemporary in its concerns, lets us hear the voices of people who might cross our paths, and seeks to raise our consciousness to the dignity of human fates.

We will begin the class by (re-?)reading Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (1953) which is so timeless that it is newly relevant. We will then sample American and Canadian plays that have been published in the past two decades to see how playwrights translate the anguish of everyday living onto the stage.
