War crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity and crimes against peace have marked the 20th century and are an ongoing reality in our times. But how do states and the international community react to those crimes?
This semester course focuses on the core crimes of international criminal law. It will treat the foundations of international criminal law, its development as well as the substantial aspects of international criminal law such as the different crimes and general rules on their application such as different modes of individual criminal responsibility, but also the reasons for excluding criminal resonsibility. Furthermore, we will look at different actors in the field of international criminal law such as the International Criminal Court, ad hoc tribunals, hybrid courts and domestic jursidiction.
Training objectives After completing this course students should know the rules of international criminal law and the different national and international institutions active in the field of international criminal law. They should be able to solve cases in international criminal law, but also to reflect critically about problems and challenges in the field of international criminal law.
Descriptions of Exams The examination consists in an oral exam of 15 minutes (without time for preparation).
Students are expected to use their own legal resources such as acts and international agreements during the exam. Those documents may be annotated at leisure.
