Description The course is designed to introduce students to the particularities of international management.
A broad overview over the most relevant topics in international management is given.
In this course we will first examine the changes in the external environment leading to increased internationalization and simultaneously forming the context for international companies.
Then, the basic dimensions of management in a multinational corporation, i.e. 1. the coordination of foreign subsidiaries, 2. the geographic configuration of the company network and 3. the strategic options concerning the governance modes (i.e. markets, hierarchies, or cooperation) are explained.
Selected management functions in international companies (human resource management, information management, controlling) are shortly discussed and selected value chain activities (e.g. production, research & development) are looked into.
The exercises for the course will be in the form of case studies that are prepared by teams of students and presented in class. The evaluation of the case study is part (40%) of the final grade.
Training objectives Students should become familiar with the most important facets of globalization and its influence on company management as well as with the most fundamental models, methods, and tools in international management.
