    Description

This interactive, workshop-style course is open to researchers and academic staff of the University of Fribourg at an upper-intermediate (B2+) to advanced level (C1) who would like to further develop their writing skills in academic and professional contexts.

The main areas of focus on this course include: how to write professional emails; general-specific texts and problem-solution texts; selected sections of research articles (e.g. abstracts, introductions, literature reviews, etc.); sentence structure and cohesion; as well as the practical development of writing sub-skills such as paraphrasing, summarising and proofreading. There will also be the chance to focus on and gain practice in (and feedback on) writing the types of texts which are important to you. In addition, we will review key areas of grammar and vocabulary in order to gain a clearer overview of what language to use in different forms of written communication.

Throughout the course you will benefit from the opportunity to engage and share information with peers about your areas of research, knowledge and expertise. You will also be encouraged to develop your critical thinking skills and to express your ideas more effectively, across a range of academic disciplines and professional contexts.

Evaluation: Regular attendance and active participation is required to pass this course, as is the successful completion of a minimum of 4 written assignments.

    1. Write a professional email
    2. Write an abstract for a research article
    3. Write an introduction to a research article
    4. Write a problem-solution text
    5. *Write a text of your own choice (*to be negotiated with the lecturer)
