    Description

This is a challenging and interactive workshop-style course for all students across the university with an upper-intermediate to advanced level of English (B2-C1). This course is ideal for students who would like to develop their understanding and confidence in using grammar for written assignments. Throughout the course we will explore and review key areas of grammar (and vocabulary) in context so that you have a better idea about what language to use in different kinds of academic writing.

The main areas of focus on this B2-C1 Writing & Grammar Skills course include: an overview of the English tense system; the use of modal verbs, articles and the active versus passive voice in academic writing; academic vocabulary in use, e.g. literal versus idiomatic meanings, word formation, collocation, connotation, and register; how to write a professional formal letter, a well-structured essay, a detailed description of a graph, and a text showing cause and effect. In addition, you will gain practice in important writing sub-skills such as summarising, paraphrasing and proofreading. Along the way you will also be encouraged to develop your critical thinking skills and to express your ideas more effectively and efficiently, across a range of academic disciplines.

Evaluation: Regular attendance and active participation is required to pass this course, as is the successful completion of all 4 formal written assignments.

    1. Write a formal letter of complaint
    2. Write an expository essay
    3. Write a detailed description of a graph
    4. Write a cause and effect text
