Research Grants from the University of Fribourg at Doctoral Level
The Unifr scholarships, which are awarded as part of a doctorate, enable doctoral students whose place of residence is abroad to complete a research stay at Unifr for a maximum of five months.

Criteria for the application
- Completion of at least 2 semesters of doctoral studies at a foreign university recognized by the University of Fribourg (Unifr)
- Applicant cannot be enrolled at Unifr
- Residence outside of Switzerland
- Support from a Professor from Unifr
- Submission of the research project to be carried out at Unifr
- Timely submission of the application with all required documents (see documents for submission)

Documents to submit
The diplomas and the other documents required for the application must be attached as certified copies of the originals and/or must be translated. The languages accepted for the documents or translations are German, English, and French. If the attached documents are in another language, only certified translations by a sworn translator will be accepted.
The application must include the following documents (only online applications will be accepted):
Administrative documents:
- Completed application form (must be printed, signed, and uploaded again)
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter of support from the professor at the University of Fribourg who agrees to supervise the scholarship holder during his/her stay. The letter should outline the scope of the supervision (in-person meetings, type of supervision, researchers involved, etc.) and the benefits of the collaboration both for the applicant and for the University of Fribourg.
- Letter of support from the professor supervising the doctorate at the foreign university
- Confirmation from the home university that the scholarship holder has been enrolled for a doctorate for at least two semesters
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent higher-education diploma from a university recognized by the University of Fribourg
- Master's degree or equivalent higher-education diploma from a foreign university recognized by the University of Fribourg
- Transcript of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programme (Transcript of Records)
- Proof of residence
- Digital ID photo (JPEG format)
- Copy of passport
Scientific documents:
- Description of the research project at the University of Fribourg (including a time table)
- Explanation of the necessity of a scholarship to carry out the research project and justification of why the research must be done at the University of Fribourg

Application deadlines
There are two application deadlines every year:
- 28 February for stays starting after the following 1 September (the application link will be published on 1 November)
- 30 June for stays starting after the following 1 February (the application link will be published on 1 April)
Please note: The procedure to obtain a visa usually takes at least three months!
