2 Monumenta Sirletana Romanae Curiae (MSRC) - The Complete Works and Correspondence of Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto

The project is a multi-volume critical edition of Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto‘s (1514-1585) complete correspondence and his unpublished works. Sirleto is recognized as one of the most productive Church prelates of sixteenth century Rome. During the seventy-one years of his life, he managed to establish himself as one of the most esteemed erudite cardinals within the Roman Curia, ultimately earning him the sobriquet il sapientissimo Calabro (“the all-knowing Calabrese”). His vast correspondence, comprising over seven thousand letters, and his numerous unpublished works attest for Sirleto’s importance in shaping Roman and papal ecclesiastical government in Reformation Europe. The aim of the series is to provide critical access to Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto’s many manuscripts that are principally kept in Roman and Vatican archives as well as libraries. The first volume, which provides a critical edition of Sirleto's treatises about the cathedra Petri and the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, is currently in print (cfr. F. Malesevic, Rome's Apostolic Heritage. The Discourses about St Peter's Basilica and Santa Maria Maggiore, De Gruyter, Berlin/Boston [2023] (MSRCOperae, vol. 1)), while the first volume of the register of Sirleto's letters, covering the period between 1539 and 1545, has also been submitted to the De Gruyter publishing house for publication.
