Description This course is strongly recommended for all students doing a project in English linguistics. It is specifically designed to provide tailor-cut support to students doing advanced projects in English linguistics, such as an MA thesis, or a BA thesis, BA oral examination, or an Applied Project in English Linguistics in Module 8 of the BALET.
It offers a unique and stimulating opportunity to make progress on your project with a group of like-minded students. The course structure will be closely linked to students' individual projects and specific needs. It can be taken as an additional course for 3 ECTS, or as part of Module 8. All the work done in this class will be directly linked to your project.
Part of the challenge when studying the English language from a linguistic perspective has to do with the specific research methods required. In this practical course we will focus on the methodologies associated with fieldwork investigation, basic experimental designs, data collection, data analysis, quantitative analysis, etc.; taking a hands-on approach informed by the very projects students are working on.
As we develop your project, we will see how to implement the right methods when testing a hypothesis and how to construct a theoretical argument for the aspect of the English language that interests you. In the process, one of the main goals is to stimulate the atmosphere of a research team amongst students who work on an advanced project in English linguistics.
Training objectives - development of goodpractice methods for the scientific study of English
