Jerusalem, the holy city of the three so‑called “Abrahamic” religions, has been a long‑desired, dreamed‑of, and essential destination for many generations, transcending social, cultural, and confessional divisions. While the desire to visit it, to see and touch its holy places, led many people to undertake a long and dangerous journey to Palestine, the desire to preserve the memory of the sanctity of these sites had a powerful impact on the collective imagination and on artistic creation. Switzerland, as a place where different cultural and religious traditions converge, was for centuries strongly connected to the Holy Land: its pilgrims not only left us important written descriptions of their itineraries, but also brought back and disseminated traces of their experience, in the form of souvenirs, images, and relics, as well as through attempts to recreate at home the venerable places they had visited overseas.

The seminar will make it possible to deepen the understanding of the artistic and cultural phenomena that, in Fribourg, in Thun, in Lugano and in many other parts of the Swiss territory, drew inspiration from pilgrimage to Palestine.

Students will be required to prepare a monographic presentation on one of the topics introduced in the first session. The work will have to be presented in class and discussed with the active participation of all attendees; the written version will need to take this discussion into account.
