Description Knowledge of the basics on the origins and manipulations of biological sequence data is a must for any biomedical researcher. This class is oriented towards two main directions. First it introduces the basic concepts of DNA and protein sequences databases and analysis using bioinformatics tools (pairwise alignments, dotplots, multiple sequence alignments, searching databases with sequences, sequences motifs or Hidden Markov models). Secondly it introduces genomics concepts like the sequencing technologies, the human genome project, and the genome browsers. Each week one main concept is detailed, explaining the algorithms of the most important methods with a particular look at their advantages and drawbacks. Each week practical exercises directly connected to the theoretical lectures are used to strengthen the learning by leveraging on simple web tools.
