    Description

This seminar is a research-based capstone in strategic management, covering the main theories of strategic management and their empirical applications to different industries and contexts. The seminar is, among others, meant as a springboard for both Master theses and doctoral training in the area of strategic management. The students will be required to write a scientific article in strategic management as the main assignment of the course.

In the first part of the course, we will read and discuss in-depth classics (e.g. resource-based view, behavioral theory of the firm) as well as cutting edge (e.g. sustainability, optimal distinctiveness) research in strategic management, that can be used as foundation for the research paper. Each student (or group of students) will be responsible for chairing a session. The second part will be about research design and methodology of the research paper, examining key methods in strategic management and addressing methodological issues faced by the students. The last section of the course will be dedicated to presentations of the research projects as well as in-depth feedback to refine the papers. At the end of each session, there will be a ‘clinic’: time dedicated to help students with specific problems they may have with their research throughout the term.

    Training objectives

The seminar aims to provide a broad yet in-depth knowledge of the key theories in strategic management. It also aims to cultivate rigorous research skills such as close reading, methodological appraisal, and systematic critique, which are essential to Master theses and doctoral research in the field of strategic management.
