Description This lecture teaches the theoretical background to the main techniques in modern genetics. Some applications are also discussed. After a short introduction on general concepts and definitions, students will learn how to localize genes and how to generate mutants. This lecture will also present the design of forward genetic screens, the reverse genetics approach, the design of CRISPR-mediated gene editing, the use of sequence databases. This course is aimed at students who are interested in pursuing their education on model organisms such as yeast, mouse, Drosophila, C. elegans and Arabidopsis.
Training objectives In following this lecture, students will get acquainted with the theoretical background and significance of the main techniques that are used in modern genetics, and some of its applications. Students will learn how to construct mutant strains, how to localize genes, and how to clone them. Furthermore, this lecture will also present the design of forward genetic screens, the reverse genetics approach and the use of sequence databases. This course is intended for students who are interested in pursuing their education on genetic model organisms such as yeast, Drosophila, C. elegans and Arabidopsis.
