Writing a Non-Academic CV: How to ‘Translate’ Your Skills

Academic or specialist Seminar
09.11.2026 12:30 - 13:30
+ Mixed

Academic CVs often follow conventions that prioritise comprehensive lists of research activities, publications and teaching experience. Outside academia, however, recruiters and employers expect a different approach—one that highlights concrete skills, achievements and the practical relevance of past work.

This session introduces the key differences between an academic CV and a CV used for roles beyond the academic research environment. We will examine why tailoring a CV to the expectations of broader professional settings is essential and how structure and content need to evolve. Participants will receive practical guidance on how to reframe research experience into widely applicable competencies.

Target audience: PhD candidates and postdocs.

This event will be held in a hybrid format. The presentation will last ca. 20 minutes, followed by ca. 10 minutes of Q&A. We will then conclude with 30 minutes of informal discussion, exchange and cookies. During this time, members of the SPR team will be present to answer your questions.

Please note that the event will be recorded. Online participants will be able to join the presentation and Q&A session only.

This event will be held in English. Q&A in French and German is welcome.
