Prof. Giulia Raimondo
EU Internal Market Law
Giulia Raimondo is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Fribourg, where she is affiliated with the Chair for EU Law and Migration Law and the Institute for European Law. She holds a PhD in International and European Law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva, awarded summa cum laude, as well as a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from McGill University and a law degree from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. Her academic training is marked by a strong international and interdisciplinary dimension, including an Erasmus exchange at Université Paris Nanterre, two years of training as a Europaeum Scholars, and a SNSF Doc.Mobility Fellowship at the University of Oxford, where she conducted doctoral research at the Faculty of Law.
Before joining the University of Fribourg, Dr Raimondo was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg. She regularly consults for international organisations (such as the OHCHR, the European Parliament, the ILO) and national NGOs on issues related to migration, asylum, non-discrimination, and human rights. She has also previously worked as a trainee lawyer and judicial intern in Italy and has held various academic roles in Geneva, Brussels, and Luxembourg. Dr Raimondo is an active member of several professional associations, including the European Society of International Law, the International Law Association, and the Société Suisse de Droit International, and serves on the ILA Committee on International Migration and International Law as well as the coordinating committee of the ESIL Interest Group on Migration and Refugee Law.
Her research has been recognised with prestigious awards, including the 2022 Swiss Association for International Law Prize and the 2023 Ladislas Mysyrowicz Prize for the best thesis in refugee studies. Her first monograph, The European Integrated Border Management: Frontex, Human Rights, and International Responsibility, was published by Hart Publishing in 2024. Her research focuses on EU migration and asylum law, international responsibility, EU agencies, border management, and the relationship between fundamental rights and EU internal market and migration policies. This research directly informs her teaching, which emphasises a critical approach to EU law, connecting doctrinal analysis with broader questions of equality, accountability, and human rights protection in contemporary European integration.
