Benedikt Pirker holds degrees from various institutions, among which the College of Europe (Bruges) and the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Geneva). He is a Titular professor at the Chair for European Law, International Law and Public Law of the University of Fribourg, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Liechtenstein Institute in Liechtenstein focusing on international, European Union and European Economic Area law. Previously, he worked as a Legal Advisor at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. In the latter capacity, he advised on public international law (ius ad bellum, Security Council, Swiss neutrality) and was part of the Swiss negotiating delegation’s free movement of persons team during the recent negotiations between Switzerland and the European Union.
He has taught, among others, at the Universities of St. Gallen, Bern, and Ottawa, and has conducted research at the European University Institute, Hebrew University Jerusalem, the MPIL Heidelberg, and the University of Michigan. He was co-president of the International Language & Law Association (2021-2023) and is member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Language and Law and of European Papers, as well as an associate editor of the European Law Blog. He has published widely in international and European law, among others in journals such as the European Journal of International Law, the Leiden Journal of International Law, the European Law Review, the Cambridge Yearbook of European Legal Studies or the Yearbook of European Law.
