Alessandro Spina is currently a Member of the Legal Service of the European Commission.
Alessandro holds a law degree cum laude from the University of Siena, LLM (M.Jur.) from the University of Oxford and Ph.D. in Law and Economics from the University of Siena.
In his 20-year old professional experience, he has held positions in academia, private practice and public institutions.
He was a legal adviser and the data protection officer at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) – the EU pharmaceutical regulator- from 2009 to 2018.
He is a dual-qualified Italian and English lawyer and appears regularly before the Court of Justice of the EU, in a wide range of litigation (pharmaceuticals, transparency).
He was a Researcher in Private Law at the University of Siena (2008) and he has been an Adjunct Professor of Administrative Law in the University of Milan Statale in 2011/2012 and a visiting lecturer in Risk Regulation at the IBL in Fribourg since 2016.
His academic interests are EU law, health and pharmaceutical law, and risk and behavioral regulation. He is a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Risk Regulation
