The University of Fribourg in the 2025 Academic and Sustainability Rankings
The University of Fribourg has maintained a solid international presence in global academic and sustainability rankings this year, underscoring the continued impact and visibility of its research and teaching activities.
General Rankings
In the general rankings, Fribourg remains firmly anchored among leading universities worldwide. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, the University once again appears in the 401–500 band, confirming its stable performance. In the QS World University Ranking, Fribourg is now placed 642nd globally. At the same time, in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), it maintains its position for the fifth consecutive year in the 501–600 tier.
Subjet-Specific Evaluation
Subject-specific evaluations highlight several areas of distinction. In the THE Subject Rankings, Fribourg remains well placed in the Arts and Humanities, ranked in the 101–200 bracket, while the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Psychology all appear in the 301–400 range. In the QS Rankings by Subject, the University maintains strong performances in the Humanities, with Classics and Ancient History ranked 51–100th. The Shanghai Subject Rankings further acknowledge Fribourg’s strengths, listing Geography among the top 200, and placing Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Human Biological Sciences, and Psychology all in the 201–300 tier. Finally, the Leiden Rankings Open Edition places Fribourg in an impressive 84th position in the Life and Earth Sciences field.
Sustainability
Sustainability remains a central pillar of the University’s mission. In the QS Sustainability Ranking, Fribourg improved to 349th, placing 5th among the 13 Swiss universities evaluated. In the THE Impact Rankings, based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the University remains in the 1001–1500 band overall. In specific SDGs, Fribourg achieved notable results, ranking
- 101–200 for SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions),
- 201–300 for SDG 15 (Life on Land),
- 301–400 for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
These results confirm the University of Fribourg’s sustained commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and social and environmental responsibility.
