"La ville ornée" - a major SNSF project funding for the Department of Art History and Archaeology

Between the 15th and 18th centuries, a large number of European cities featured painted facades with historic scenes, monumental figures and ornaments. The project, led by Professor Jérémie Koering, focuses on secular buildings (palaces, town halls, bourgeois houses, etc.) and intends to analyze the political, social and artistic issues associated with this decorative practice.

The project will run from September 2021 to August 2025, and the Swiss National Science Foundation has allocated 1.36 million francs to it, the largest sum among the projects approved by the SNSF this semester.
