Physical Exercise and Sleep in Older Adults

This project examined how specific types of exercise influence sleep and brain health in older adults. Three months of balance training improved the brain’s ability to regulate and coordinate its activity and enhanced perceived sleep quality. Resistance training, by contrast, appears to improve brain metabolism, and it increased sleep efficiency. Together, these findings show that targeted exercise can enhance brain function, improve sleep, and support healthy aging through both exercise-specific and shared mechanisms.
