A large majority of the population has a smartphone. A lot of smartphone applications and even the smartphone itself are designed to maximize the time users will spend on their phones. These design choices have consequences on the users' attention and might even lead to addictive behavior.
Research projects are and will be looking at the impact of interface design on usage behavior, how more ethical design can be implemented and how a healthier smartphone relationship can be achieved through nudging.
