Note: Prerequisites:
a) WAP 1 or an exemption from WAP 1 (as agreed by the instructor together with the English Language Department) b) Aptitude Test This course is for BA LET students majoring or minoring in English. The course is a continuation of WAP I and will focus on the further development and refinement of academic writing skills including paraphrasing skills, presenting counter-arguments, in-text citations, structured outline, multiple drafts with in depth revision and editing, stylistic features, and so forth with the aim of producing a solid research paper following MLA Guidelines. |

General: •write, revise and re-organize written texts at a deep level (beyond just mere ‘editing’)
•use formal style, excluding informal language
•improve ability to evaluate one’s own writing according to relevant criteria
•write idiomatically, using structures easily understood by native-like users of English which includes recognizing and excluding non-native features.
Specific:
◾write for a specific purpose and audience
◾develop and revise as needed an argument or thesis
◾develop a structured outline for a research paper
◾conduct research in order to find and select relevant sources to support an argument
◾integrate quotations and paraphrased passages into one’s own writing
◾use appropriate in-text citations and create a works cited page using MLA,
◾improve ability to write a successful introduction which immediately engages the reader
◾improve ability to write a successful conclusion which avoids merely summarizing what has been written
◾Improve ability to hedge when appropriate
◾offer constructive and appropriate peer feedback on a first draft following guidelines
◾respond conscientiously to written and oral feedback from the instructor (and peers)
◾increase use of academic vocabulary/formal language
◾develop a greater facility to draft complex sentences
◾understand plagiarism and how to avoid it |
