This course is dedicated to the study of international and European human rights law. The first part of the course addresses cross-cutting issues in human rights law such as the sources, the right-holders, the duty-bearers, the scope and content of the duties, the restrictions and derogations to human rights in both universal and European human rights instruments (EU and Council of Europe), whereas the second part of the course deals with institutional and procedural issues raised by the monitoring and implementation mechanisms for those rights both universally and on the European plane (CJEU and ECtHR).

Teaching style is socratic, based on compulsory reading by students and a discussion of questions in class.

No passive livestreaming is foreseen in 2026-27.

Students are expected to master:

The examination is a 2-hour written examination. Students are asked to address two questions of the kind discussed in class.

Students may use their copy of the Besson/Ziegler, Recueil de droit international public, latest edition or Bisset, Blackstone’s International Human Rights Law Documents, latest edition. This copy may be annotated in conformity with the Dean's Office 2016 Rules on Annotation and will be checked upon entry in the examination hall.
