Biografie

Dr Loïc Riom is a Senior Researcher at the Human-IST Institute of the University of Fribourg, and a Lecturer affiliated with the STS Lab at the University of Lausanne.

He holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from the Centre de Sociologie de l'Innovation (PSL University, Paris). His research investigates the relationships between markets, technological innovation, and culture. Drawing on ethnography, digital methods, and controversy mapping, he studies how technologies are shaped through social practices, political processes, and economic arrangements.

Prior to joining the University of Fribourg, Loïc worked at the University of Lausanne, where he explored the transformation of cultural and creative industries in platform-driven economies. Together with Professor Tanja Schneider (Technical University of Denmark), he also examined the politics of venture capital and its role in shaping technological innovation and its global circulation. 

Since 2020, Loïc has served as Co-President of STS-CH, the Swiss Association for the Studies of Science, Technology and Society.

His work has been published in leading journals, including Science, Technology & Human Values, Science as Culture, Social Media + Society, and the Journal of Cultural Economy. His forthcoming monograph, Making Music Matter: Recomposing Live Music in a Platform-Driven Economy, will be published next year by Bristol University Press.

At the Human-IST Institute, Loïc is a member of the SAIS research group and contributes to the SNSF-funded project “Performing Artificial Intelligence: Governance, Agency, Action – An Interdisciplinary Inquiry", where he studies the governance of artificial intelligence in Switzerland.
