Description This is an advanced course in public international law with the aim of making students aware of the complex challenges of modern international law. It is divided into a number of blocks treating such subjects as international economic law, human rights and humanitarian law and dispute settlement in international law. A moot court provides students with an opportunity to gain some hands-on experience in international law.
The course will mainly consist of discussions in class, for which students must prepare in advance by doing compulsory readings. The exam will be built on the discussions in class.
If you intend to take this course, please send an email to benedikt.pirker@unifr.ch to receive the password for the Moodle platform.
Objectifs de formation The goal of the course is to familiarize students with selected topics of international law in more depth. They ought to be able to engage with complex questions posed by today’s international law. Crucially, the goal is that students learn to form their own opinion and to defend it based on sound arguments. A basic knowledge of general public international law is indispensable to follow the course (some students may have to prepare/repeat in advance for this purpose).
Description des examens The assessment takes the form of a 2 hours written final exam which can contain a mixture of case problems, essay questions and questions testing the students’ knowledge. The exam will be open book.
Documents
Bibliographie Documentation (recommended and compulsory readings) will be made available on “moodle”.
Students must do the compulsory readings before coming to class to be able to participate in discussions.
