Description With the advent of new Information Technologies and in particular Artificial Intelligence, the entire society is experiencing considerable change. This includes the legal field, where the spread of LegalTech is gathering pace. This term refers to the use of new technology in the legal professions, for example in research, information extraction, document generation and even assisting in legal reasoning.
The development and use of these tools requires a mutual understanding between developers of such tools and the legal professionals; the developers are required to seize the requirements and needs of the legal field, while lawyers have to be aware of the capabilities and the limits of the technologies.
The aim of this course is to foster this understanding by letting students of the Law and of the MSc Joint Master in Computer Science and the MSc Business Informatics (BI) collaborating on concrete projects in the domain of LegalTech.
At the start of the semester, the students from the law department receive an introduction to information technology. Simultaneously, the students of Computer Sciences / Business Informatics will gain a basic, project focused understanding of the law. These classes will take place in the first two weeks of the semester. This introduction will includepresentations from professionals working in the field.
Upon completion of the introductory classes, groups are formed and each group chooses a practical project on which it will work over the semester. At the end, the group will present a functioning tool designed for a specific legal task.
Objectifs de formation The Course brings together students from the two disciplines with the aim to learn how to work in an interdisciplinary context by collaboratively developing a tool that can be used in the legal work.
The learnings should prepare the candidates for developing and using information technology applications.By the end, the candidates :
- have acquired a general understanding of LegalTech, including of the respective other field;
- are able to contribute effectively in a LegalTech project;
- can apply the fundamental concepts regarding the set-up this type of project
