The Centre for the Study of the Eastern Churches is affiliated to the Institute for Ecumenical Studies (ISO). It contributes to achieving the objectives of the ISO.
The Centre contributes to the exchange between Western and Eastern Churches. As an interdisciplinary centre, it cooperates with competent partners within the university and in national and international academic settings.
The Centre offers a platform for the self-interpretation and development of the Eastern theological tradition from the perspective of the diaspora, in exchange with the theological and philosophical thinking of Western Church traditions and in the service of a deeper communion of the Church.
From an academic perspective, the Centre seeks trustful cooperation with the Eastern Churches.
Clarification with regard to the statutes (as agreed with the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Orthodoxe Centre in Chambésy):
"Within the Department of Theology at the University of Fribourg the Centre St. Nicholas is the privileged partner of the "Institute for higher studies in orthodox theology" in Chambésy. It strengthens the cooperation with this Institute on the basis of the Agreement of May 1 2012 between the University of Fribourg and the Orthodox Centre of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in Chambésy. It contributes in particular to the application of the Regulations of the study programme for the "Master of Arts in theological studies (Specialization: interchristian and interreligious studies)".
