Fribourg was the place of my academic integration - Stefanos Athanasiou appointed professor in Munich

Dr Stefanos Athanasiou, German-speaking Orthodox theologian with Greek roots and priest of the Ecumenical Patriarcate, lecturer at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Fribourg since 2018, has been appointed to the Full Professorship of Systematic Theology (Dogmatics, Ethics and Ecumenical Theology) at the Institution of Formation in Orthodox Theology of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, starting on 1 August 2023.

In addition to other academic and ecclesiastical duties, Dr Stefanos Athanasiou was responsible for the "Introduction to Orthodox Theology" at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Fribourg together with the professor of dogmatics and theology of ecumenism Dr Barbara Hallensleben. Fribourg was, as he himself emphasises, the place of his academic integration from 2018 until he accepted his professorship. Here has also been a member of the Academic Board of the Study Centre for Eastern Churches.

We sincerely thank Prof. Athanasiou for his many years of service to our Faculty of Theology - and hope for a new, fruitful collaboration!
