  • Why Business Informatics?

    The domain of business informatics

Business informatics focuses on how computer science can be used to enhance business. Examples of typical tasks include using innovative computer science based solutions to improve business processes and create new workflows.

The design, implementation and management of computer science solutions in business are tasks which are usually performed in a team composed of professionals from different business areas such as production, logistics, marketing, and sales. Information management specialists take a central, leading and mediating role in these tasks.

A lack of business informatics professionals

The need for highly qualified business informatics professionals is and will remain high - there is currently a shortage of such professionals and this fact is not expected to change in the near future. As a business informatics professional you will help shape the future, whether in industry, commerce, management, the service sector or in research. A degree in business informatics gives you all of the prerequisites you'll need for a successful start in the professional world.

  • Why in Fribourg?

    Orientation of the studies

The Bachelor in Business Informatics at the University of Fribourg provides a high quality fundamental education in business informatics. In addition to typical business informatics topics such as information systems modeling, requirements engineering and IT security, the program includes programming and quantitative methods and in the first and second years in particular, economics and business management. This combination of solid skills in economics and computer science and a good foundation in business and economics are particularly useful and desired in the labor market.

    Practical relevance

A great deal of emphasis is placed on proactical relevance, both in the lectures as well as in independent work. Typically, concrete problems defined in cooperation with companies are addressed in the seminar and in the bachelor thesis.

    Multilingualism

Lectures in the bachelor program are given in French and English or French/German and English, and additional material is often provided in English. However, irrespective of the language in which a particular course is taught, students can choose to take the exam for that course in either German or French. Experience has shown that the multilingual aspect of our program helps students acquire valuable language skills which are very useful in practice, particularly in the Swiss and European job markets.

    Contact with students and staff

For new students, for whom a university is still a big and unfamiliar institution, it is important to feel comfortable and well looked after. At the University of Fribourg, you will find that getting to know your fellow students and contacting your professors is easier than in most other universities. Your professors are, of course, highly qualified scientists, just as in all other Swiss universities - the main difference is that at the University of Fribourg they tend to be a bit more accessible than elsewhere.
