The Cremona group in two variables is the group of all birational
transformations of the affine plane ; an element of this group is a transformation
of the plane which is defined by rational formulae in the affine variables (X,Y).
I shall describe the main properties of this group, and compare it to classical
transformation groups, like group of matrices or groups of diffeomorphisms.
