Elon Lindenstrauss from Hebrew University received a Fields
medal last year for his work in ergodic theory and dynamical systems
with applications to deep problems in diophantine approximation and to
quantum unique ergodicity which concerns eigenfunctions of the
Laplacian on surfaces. In explaining some of his work, I will give the
first definitions of ergodic theory, illustrate it on groups and
spaces of matrices and show how this relates to long-standing unsolved
easy-to-state problems in number theory.
