Professor Mariano Delgado from Fribourg was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule St. Augustin (Germany) on 15 October 2018.


The Philosophical-Theological University St. Augustin (D), which was founded in 1926 by the Steyler missionaries, awarded the first Dr. h.c. of its history to the Fribourg professor Mariano Delgado on 15 October 2018 for his excellent research work especially in the field of church history, missionary science and interreligious dialogue.

In his laudation Prof. Joachim Piepke emphasized the scientific merits of Prof. Mariano Delgado and honored the focal points of his 700 publications. Mariano Delgado, born in Spain in 1955, is Professor of Church History and Director of the Institute for the Study of Religions and Interreligious Dialogue at the Theological Faculty of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

The Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule St. Augustin is a state- and church-recognized academic university with the right to award doctorates. As a recognised scientific university, it offers a sound education in the philosophical disciplines and all areas of theology. In addition, students receive in-depth knowledge in the fields of mission theology, ethnology and religious studies in the study focus "Mission, Cultures and Religions", which is unique in German-speaking countries. The aim is to develop special skills for intercultural and interreligious dialogue, which are urgently needed in multicultural societies and in the globalised world.
