Diastolic Geometry

Sponsored by the SNSF Ambizione, the research project "Diastolic geometry" (September 2026 – August 2030) aims at understanding the geometry of various shapes by means of slicing them into families of simpler ones. A typical example to keep in mind is cutting the surface of a complicated donut or pretzel into loops, measuring the longest loop in each slicing, and looking for the slicing in which this longest loop is as short as possible. This approach connects to questions in pure mathematics (systolic geometry, minimal surfaces, high-dimensional expanders, convex geometry) as well as theoretical computer science (dimensionality reduction in data science, error correction in quantum computations).
