Based on textual and visual sources, the lecture will analyze the courtly rituals and ceremonial etiquettes of the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia (1198-1375). It will demonstrate how the sovereigns of this East Mediterranean state made use of their corporeal appearances for consolidating the political power and what were the intended implications of these aesthetic enactments in the long and ambiguous process of governance.
