    Studied at the University of Freiburg i. Ue., 1986 Dr. utr. iur.; as a scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation, research stays at the University of Tübingen, at the Max Planck Institute for Criminal Law in Freiburg i. Br. and at the Institute for Medieval Canon Law in Berkeley/USA.

    From 1992 professor associé, since 1994 ordinary professor of legal history and canon law at the University of Fribourg i. Ue.; director of the Institute of Law and Religion there, in this function advisory work for state authorities and religious communities in Switzerland as well as contact person for Swiss and foreign media.

    Editor of the Freiburger Veröffentlichungen zum Religionsrecht; co-editor of the Swiss Yearbook of Canon Law and the series European Legal and Regional History.

    Research fellow at the Faculty of Law of Renmin University, Beijing. Member of the Working Group for Swiss Constitutional History; 2007-2011 member of the scientific advisory board of the European Institute for Intercultural and Interreligious Research, Vaduz; member of the scientific advisory board of the Research Centre for European Legal and Regional History at the University of St. Gallen; corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences.

    In his publications, Prof. R. Pahud de Mortanges deals, among other things, with current issues in the relationship between the state and religious communities.
