Council of Florence

A main topic of the Centre of St. Nicholas for 2018 is a new evaluation of the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1439-1445). Since the Council did not find a sustainable reception with reference to the aim of the union between the Eastern and the Western Church, not only was the Union bull "Laetentur Caeli" was not put into practice, but the term "unio" itself ha been discredited. During a study day at the Collège des Bernardins in Paris, Prof. Barbara Hallensleben emphasized that the great changes in the West and East shortly after the Council of Florence must be taken into account: the fall of Constantinople on the one hand and on the other hand the growing attention to the Reformation and the following division of the Western Church. From 9th to 12th September 2018, the Centre St. Nicholas invites, in collaboration with Pro Oriente (Vienna) to an expert discussion in order to stimulate further research.
