Sedimentary Record in Ethiopia

Since 2013, the Carbonate Sedimentology Research Group is working closely together with the School of Earth Sciences at Addis Ababa University to unravel the unique Mesozoic and Quaternary sedimentary records in Ethiopia. Especially, the northern part of the Afar, the Danakil Depression, forms the major focus of ongoing projects. The Danakil Depression is an extra-ordinary field lab where the spatial and temporal distribution of sedimentary units and sedimentary facies evolution in active rift settings, paced by global environmental fluctuations, sea-level changes and volcano-tectonic events, can be studied in detail.
