Spring Carbonates in Fribourg

Tufa deposits are an ubiquitous feature in Fribourg and its surroundings. Tufa deposits are calcareous freshwater spring deposits formed by physical and/or biogeochemical CO2 degassing around carbonate-rich springs.

This projects aims to (1) understand the significance of tufa deposits in the Canton of Fribourg, (2) understand the nature of tufa precipitation through space and time, (3) monitor the potential link between seasonal changes and tufa precipitation taking a lab@field approach, and (4) understand the effect of (micro)-biota in tufa precipitation
