MicroCarb@Lab

Microbial ecosystems play a key role in sedimentary systems driving often authigenic mineral precipitation and early diagenesis. How, why and when microbes induce and/or influence carbonate precipitation is still under debate. The link between environmental change and the response of microbial communities in sedimentary systems driving mineral precipitation and dissolution is often not clear. The Carbonate Sedimentology Research Group is taking a lab@field and field@lab approach to monitor carbonate precipitation and dissolution through space and time in distinct sedimentary systems. Understanding better the tight link between environmental change and the microbial-mediated end-product will allow the potential use of microbial carbonates as paleo-environmental proxy.
