Learning with AI: Metacognition and Learning Strategies with Chatbots
In this workshop, participants will explore how ChatGPT and Copilot can support learning, while considering their limitations. They will learn the principles of metacognition and self-regulated learning and use AI to practise strategies such as retrieval, self-explanation, elaboration, feedback and reflection. Through prompting activities, they will use AI as a tutor, quizmaster, feedback provider and reflection coach. They will also consider when AI encourages active learning and when it risks creating passive habits, overreliance or an illusion of understanding. Finally, participants will design and critically evaluate a personalised AI-supported learning strategy aligned with their learning goals
Objectifs
- Understand: Explain the basic principles of metacognition, self-regulated learning, and the main capabilities and limitations of AI chatbots for learning;
- Apply: Use ChatGPT or Copilot to implement evidence-based learning strategies such as retrieval practice, self-explanation, elaboration, feedback, and reflection;
- Analyse: Compare different ways of using AI for learning and identify when a chatbot supports active learning versus when it replaces useful cognitive effort;
- Evaluate: Critically assess AI-generated support and judge whether a particular AI interaction is appropriate for their learning goal;
- Create: Design a personalized AI-supported learning strategy that combines appropriate chatbot use with effective learning techniques.
